Gate & Fence Accessories

The parts that decide whether a gate still shuts properly in five years. Hinges, hook and band sets, T-hinges, latches, drop bolts, throwover catches and gate posts, sized for the gates we sell rather than guessed at in a builders’ merchant. Priced from £16.80 to £486 including VAT, and in stock alongside the gates they suit.

Buy them with a wrought iron, wooden or aluminium gate, or on their own to put right something already hanging. If a gate has dropped we service and repair gates we did not supply. For ground anchors and security posts see Simply Secure Direct and its gate hardware.

My gate has dropped. What do I need?

Usually not a new gate. A gate that drags or will not latch is most often worn hinges or a post that has moved, and replacement fittings or a re-set post puts it right for a fraction of the cost. Start by checking whether the post is sound, because new hinges on a moving post will not hold. We service and repair gates we did not supply, and will tell you honestly if the gate itself is past saving.

Do you sell locks, anchors and security posts?

Those are on our sister site. Simply Secure Direct carries the physical security range, including gate and fence hardware, ground anchors and chains and security posts and bollards. For commercial sites we install bollards and barriers and wider premises security.

Can you fit them for me?

Yes. Rehanging a gate on new fittings is a small job and often gets done alongside something else, so it is worth asking if you have other work in mind. We cover Shropshire, the West Midlands, Staffordshire, Cheshire and Mid Wales, and there is more on how we work on our installation page.

What finishes do the fittings come in?

Black or galvanised. Black suits the powder coated finish on the wrought iron gates and railings, and looks right on a painted timber gate. Galvanised is the more utilitarian choice and is the usual answer on field and farm gates, where appearance matters less than the coating lasting. Both are sold as complete sets rather than piece by piece, so you are not hunting for a matching latch afterwards.

What sizes are the hinge sets?

Timber gate fitting sets come in 18 inch and 24 inch, in hook and band or T-hinge form, as single gate sets and double gate sets. As a rough rule the band wants to reach at least halfway across the gate, so a wider or heavier gate takes the 24 inch set. If you are unsure which suits the gate you have, send us the width and a photo and we will tell you which one to order.

What is in a fittings set?

A single gate set gives you the hinges and a latch. A double set adds a drop bolt, which holds one leaf steady in the ground while the other swings, and without it a pair will never sit properly. Sets are matched, so the finish and the fixings work together. For the gates themselves, see wooden gates, wrought iron gates and aluminium gates.

Hook and band, or T-hinge?

A hook and band hangs on a pin driven or bolted into the post, carries more weight and lets the gate lift off, which is useful on a field gate. A T-hinge screws flat to the face of the gate and the post, is easier to fit square, and suits lighter garden gates. Weight and how the post is built usually decide it between them. If in doubt on a heavy timber pair, the hook and band is the safer answer.

Will they fit the gate I already have?

Very likely, since these are standard sizes rather than anything proprietary, but it is worth checking the gate thickness and the post face before ordering. The sets are sized for the gates we sell, which covers most of what is on a UK driveway. If you are replacing fittings on an older gate, the safest approach is to measure the existing hinge and match the length. We are happy to check for you, so get in touch.

How much are they?

From £14 for a single item up to £168 for a complete double gate set, including VAT. Buying the set rather than the pieces is almost always cheaper and saves the finishes not quite matching. If you are ordering a gate at the same time, add the fittings to the same order rather than separately, so it all arrives together.

What is a throwover latch?

It is the loop-over catch you see on farm and field gates. It throws over the top rail to hold the gate shut, needs no alignment to speak of, and keeps working when the gate has moved a little, which is exactly what you want on a field entrance. It is not a security fitting, so it is the wrong choice for a boundary you need to lock. For that, see farm and field gates.

Do you sell gate posts?

Yes, though they sit in the metal fencing and railing range rather than here, including concrete-in latch posts. Which post you need depends on the gate weight and what you are fixing into, and getting it wrong is the single most common reason a gate drops. If you are not sure, a free site survey will settle it.
