Wrought Iron Gates

Hand-forged by Burbage Iron Craft in nine classic patterns, from Abbey and Balmoral through to Saxon and Stirling. The range covers garden gates, driveway pairs, rose arches and matching railings, priced from £73.80 to £2,471.40 including VAT, so a gate and the boundary either side of it can be bought as one set.

Most patterns have matching fence panels and railings. For a monogram, a crest or an unusual width see bespoke gate design, and for larger entrances estate and commercial gates. We fit and hang anything here and automate driveway pairs. More in our wrought iron guide.

Can you install them, or is it a DIY job?

Either. A garden gate is a reasonable afternoon’s work for a competent DIYer, and the rose arches are designed to assemble without tools. A driveway pair is a different proposition, because iron is heavy and the posts have to be set properly or the gate will drop and bind. We fit everything we sell across Shropshire, the West Midlands, Staffordshire, Cheshire and Mid Wales.

My old iron gate has dropped. Can you repair it?

Usually, yes. A gate that binds or drags is most often worn hinges or a post that has moved rather than a problem with the gate itself, and both are fixable. We service and repair gates including ones we did not supply, and we can rehang, re-post or refinish rather than replace where that is the sensible answer. If it is beyond saving we will say so rather than quote you for work that will not last.

Do you sell locks and security hardware?

Gate ironmongery is in gate and fence accessories. For heavier security, our sister site Simply Secure Direct carries ground anchors and chains, security posts and bollards, wheel clamps and hitch locks. For commercial sites we also install bollards and barriers and premises security.

What are your wrought iron gates made of?

Solid steel, hand-forged by Burbage Iron Craft. Typical construction is a 25mm x 10mm frame with 12mm diameter infill bars and 10mm x 3mm flat bar scrollwork, though it varies by pattern, and each product page lists its own dimensions. Matching fence panels and railings are built the same way, so a gate and the boundary either side of it look like one piece of work rather than three separate purchases.

Will wrought iron gates rust?

Not quickly. Most of the range is electro-galvanised for rust resistance and then powder coated black, which is a considerably better starting point than paint on bare steel. It is not maintenance free, though: the product pages are honest that periodic inspection and touching up will be needed to keep rust from starting, particularly on a coastal or exposed site. If you would rather not think about it at all, aluminium gates do not corrode.

How much do wrought iron gates cost?

From £61.50 for a garden railing panel up to £1,192.50 for a large driveway pair, including VAT, with most garden gates falling between £73 and £135. Price depends on the pattern, the height and whether you need a single gate or a pair. If your opening is not a standard width, made to measure is available across much of the range and is quoted individually, so send us the measurements or read about bespoke gate design.

Which pattern should I choose?

There are nine to pick from: Abbey, Balmoral, Classic, Corfe, Court, Manor, Regent, Saxon and Stirling, plus York in the rose arches. Abbey and Regent are the cleaner, more contemporary designs, while Saxon with its fleur-de-lys spear tops and Stirling with its scrollwork are the traditional end of the range. Most have matching railings and fence panels, and there are installed examples in our recent work.

Can wrought iron gates be automated?

Yes, though iron is heavier than aluminium, so the posts, hinges and motor all have to be specified to suit rather than picked off a shelf. That is worth planning before you buy rather than retrofitting later. Read up on swing gate automation, consider an intercom or keypad, and have a look at gate safety and the regulations, because an automated gate is legally a machine.

Can you make a gate to my exact size?

Yes. Made to measure is available across much of this range, and for anything further from standard we draw and manufacture from scratch, including monograms, crests and gates matched to an existing railing. See bespoke gate design for how that works, or estate and commercial gates for larger entrances. Every project starts with a free, no-obligation site visit, so get in touch with your measurements.

Do the panels come with fittings?

The railing and fence panels include fittings for mounting onto brickwork, metal or timber posts, although screws and wall plugs are not supplied, since what you need depends on what you are fixing into. Panel sizes are quoted as a post to post gap rather than the frame width, and the hinge gaps are already accounted for. Hinges, latches and drop bolts for the gates themselves are in gate and fence accessories.

Do I need planning permission for a driveway gate?

Usually not. Gates under 1 metre high adjacent to a highway, or under 2 metres elsewhere, normally fall within permitted development. The exceptions are listed buildings, conservation areas and properties where permitted development rights have been removed, so it is worth a call to your local authority before ordering a tall pair. We are happy to talk it through, and there is more in our general FAQs.
