Wooden Gates

Timber gates bring a natural warmth to a property that metal simply cannot replicate. They work particularly well in rural and semi-rural settings, blending with the landscape rather than standing against it. And for properties where privacy is important, a solid timber gate provides screening that open metal designs do not.

We supply and install wooden gates across the West Midlands, Staffordshire, Cheshire, and Mid Wales. Our range includes ready-made designs in standard sizes alongside a full bespoke service for non-standard openings and custom designs.

TIMBER OPTIONS:

The choice of timber has a significant impact on how long your gates will last and how much maintenance they will need.

Hardwoods such as iroko and oak are naturally durable and resistant to rot. They weather to an attractive silver-grey if left untreated, or they can be oiled or stained to maintain their original colour. Hardwood gates are more expensive upfront but they typically last significantly longer than softwood.

Softwoods such as Scandinavian redwood are a more affordable option and work well when properly treated with preservative. Modern pressure-treated softwood is significantly more durable than it was twenty years ago, and with regular re-treatment it will give many years of good service.

We will advise you on the best timber choice for your location and budget during the site survey.

STYLES:

Wooden gates range from simple ledge-and-brace garden gates through to grand estate entrance gates with detailed joinery. Popular styles include tongue-and-groove panels for full privacy, slatted designs for a balance of privacy and airflow, and open-frame designs with vertical or horizontal bars.

Many of our customers opt for timber gates paired with metal automation systems and intercoms. The combination of natural timber with modern access control works particularly well on rural properties.

TREATMENT AND MAINTENANCE:

Timber gates need more maintenance than metal alternatives, and it is important to be realistic about this before choosing wood. Softwood gates should be re-treated with preservative every two to three years. Hardwood gates need less frequent attention but still benefit from an annual coat of oil or stain if you want to maintain the original colour.

The most common issue with timber gates is movement caused by moisture absorption. Good quality timber, proper construction, and adequate treatment all help to minimise this, but some seasonal movement is normal and should be expected.

We will talk you through the maintenance requirements for your chosen timber during the quotation process, so there are no surprises down the line.

AUTOMATION:

Wooden gates can be automated, but the additional weight compared to aluminium needs to be accounted for. We specify motors and brackets appropriate for the weight and size of the gates, and we use stainless steel fixings to prevent staining of the timber.
