How to Secure Your Caravan Over Winter
When your caravan or motorhome is laid up for the winter months, it becomes a sitting target. Thieves know that caravans are often left unattended for weeks at a time during the off-season, and they know that many are not adequately secured. A few sensible precautions can significantly reduce the risk.
PHYSICAL SECURITY:
The most effective protection comes from physical security devices that make your caravan difficult to move.
Wheel clamps are the first line of defence. A good quality clamp such as the Bulldog range provides a visible deterrent and a genuine physical barrier. The key is choosing the right clamp for your wheel and tyre size. Different clamps are designed for different wheel diameters, so check the specifications before you buy.
Hitch locks prevent anyone from coupling your caravan to a tow vehicle. Even if they manage to defeat a wheel clamp, they cannot tow the caravan away if the hitch is locked.
Security chains allow you to secure your caravan to a ground anchor, post, or other fixed point. Used in combination with a wheel clamp and hitch lock, a chain makes the whole setup much more difficult to overcome.
WHERE YOU STORE IT MATTERS:
If you keep your caravan at home, make sure it is visible from the house and ideally covered by CCTV or at least security lighting. Keeping it behind locked gates is better still.
If you use a storage site, choose one with proper security. Look for features like perimeter fencing, CCTV, controlled access, and ideally individual pitch barriers or posts.
INSURANCE:
Check your insurance policy for security requirements. Many insurers specify that certain security devices must be fitted when the caravan is stored. Failing to meet these requirements could invalidate your cover. Most policies look for a wheel clamp and hitch lock as a minimum, and some require specific standards such as Sold Secure accreditation.
