How Much Do Electric Gates Cost?
It is one of the first questions people ask, and it is a fair one. The honest answer is that the cost of electric gates varies enormously depending on what you choose. A pair of simple ready-made aluminium gates with basic automation might come in at the lower end, while a bespoke wrought iron design with underground motors, a video intercom, and matching railings will cost considerably more.
Rather than quoting specific figures that will be out of date within months, this guide explains the factors that affect the price so you can understand what drives the cost up or down.
WHAT AFFECTS THE PRICE?
Gate Material: Aluminium gates are generally the most affordable metal option. Wrought iron costs more due to the handcraft involved. Timber sits somewhere in between depending on the species. Steel is typically used for larger commercial gates and is priced accordingly.
Gate Size: Wider and taller gates require more material and more robust automation. A pair of driveway gates for a 3-metre opening will cost less than a pair for a 5-metre opening, all else being equal.
Ready-Made vs Bespoke: Choosing from a standard range saves money compared to having something designed from scratch. Bespoke gates involve additional design time and individual manufacture.
Automation Type: Underground operators are the most discreet and the most expensive. Ram arms are a cost-effective mid-range option. Articulated arms are similar. Sliding gate systems have their own pricing structure.
Access Control: A pair of remote handsets is included as standard. Adding a video intercom, keypad, proximity reader, or smartphone integration each adds to the cost.
Groundwork: If new posts are needed, or if the ground requires preparation, this adds to the installation cost. Sites with challenging ground conditions such as rock, heavy clay, or poor drainage may need additional work.
Safety Devices: All automated gates must include appropriate safety devices. Photocells and safety edges are standard requirements, and these are included in our quotations. Some sites may require additional measures depending on the risk assessment.
WHAT IS INCLUDED IN A TYPICAL QUOTATION?
When we quote for an automated gate installation, the price includes everything needed for a complete, working system: the gates themselves, posts, all hardware, the automation system, control panel, remote handsets, basic safety devices (photocells and safety edges), all installation work including groundwork, commissioning, and handover with documentation.
Items that are additional include intercoms and access control beyond basic remotes, matching railings or fencing, and any remedial work to existing walls or surfaces.
HOW TO GET AN ACCURATE PRICE:
The only reliable way to get an accurate price is to have a site survey. We will visit your property, discuss your requirements, and provide a detailed quotation that covers everything. The survey is free and there is no obligation.
Be cautious of any company that gives you a firm price over the phone without seeing the site. There are too many variables for a phone quote to be reliable, and a low initial price often turns into extras once work begins.
